The fountain was built in 1959/60 on the triangular square in front of the Sparkasse administration building. It was donated by the Saarbrücker Kreissparkasse on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the city. The Sparkasse had announced a competition for this. This was won by a design by the architect Hans Ulrich and the artist Max Mertz.
