The church was originally built in the 14th century at the site where, according to tradition, a shepherd found a miraculous icon of Saint Mavra. It was rebuilt after a severe earthquake in 1631.
Particularly striking is the
free-standing, approximately 37 to 40-meter-high Venetian bell tower from 1802. The bells were cast in Venice and are known for their beautiful sound.
