This 7.5-mile (12.1 km) loop takes about 4 hours and 6 minutes to complete, with an elevation gain of 1686 feet (514 metres). You will walk through serene forests and woodlands, enjoying shaded paths and expansive panoramas, especially from the iconic Faro Voltiano.
To start your journey, you can reach Brunate by taking the historic funicular from Como; the ride itself provides captivating views. Be prepared for a demanding initial climb from the funicular station towards the Volta Lighthouse, which features an almost 15% gradient and steps to assist you. This trail requires good fitness and sure-footedness, but the paths are generally accessible. Capanna Cao, a mountain hut along the route, is also reachable by car if you prefer.
The Faro Voltiano, or Volta Lighthouse, is a key landmark on this route, built in 1927 to honor Alessandro Volta. You can climb its 143-step spiral staircase for a 360-degree view, extending to the Western Alps and Monte Rosa on clear days. The Capanna Cao offers a welcoming stop with traditional Lombard cuisine and outdoor seating, providing more opportunities to enjoy the views of Lake Como and the Alps. Brunate itself showcases charming Liberty-style architecture from the early 1900s.
