In Altenburg, not only does the probably oldest church in South Tyrol stand, but directly above it another church, built around a millennium later. This is the church of St. Vigil, which was consecrated to St. Vigilius, Bishop of Trent. This saint is particularly venerated today in South Tyrol and Trentino. A place of worship at this location was already mentioned in the middle of the 9th century in the Vigiliusbrief and later in 1288, 1326, and 1390. A castle complex also once perched on this porphyry dome.

Altenburg is 612 m high and around 6 km from the actual town center of Kaltern and is also known for the hiking trail through the Rastenbachklamm.
On the edge of the village we find the Gothic curate church of St. Vigilius with colorful glazed roof tiles. The current form of the church dates back to the 14th century. On the tower of the church you can also admire the oldest wall painting in Kaltern, which depicts St. Christopher and was created around 1320.

The medieval church of St. Vigilius is located a little above the well-known St. Peter Basilica in the Altenburg Forest. The Church of St. Vigil has a beautiful carved winged altar painted in gold and paint.
