In 1376 it was decided to build an outer defensive wall in the Braunschweig area. A defense tower was built away from the actual city fortifications in 1390/91. The tower was on the trade route towards Schöppenstedt and Königslutter and crossed Mittelriede and Wabe there.
At the end of the 18th century, however, the facility lost its military importance. The defense towers, including the Schöppenstedter Tower, were virtually demolished. The outbuildings were privately owned and temporarily served as an inn.
Yes, it's a shame that such a historic building is left to decay.
