The confluence of the Mittellandkanal (MLK) and the Elbe-Seitenkanal (ESK) is one of the most important hubs in the North German waterway network. It is located in Lower Saxony, directly near Edesbüttel (close to Wolfsburg and Gifhorn). The construction of the Elbe-Seitenkanal (opened in 1976) was a major strategic project during the Cold War. Before the canal existed, ships on their way to Hamburg had to use the Elbe river, which partly flowed through GDR territory or often had too little water. The connection near Edesbüttel made West Germany more independent in inland navigation.
