The Bernisse is 7 kilometers long, starts at Heenvliet and runs along Abbenbroek, Zuidland and Simonshaven to the Spui.

It is a connection from the Spui to the Nieuwe-Waterweg through which water from the Spui is admitted into the Rijnmond area. This counteracts the salinization caused by the seawater flowing in via the Nieuwe Waterweg.

The current water feature consists of lakes, bowls and pools. Together with the forests, marshy nature and meadows, the nature and recreation area is 300 hectares.
