    A British immigrant gave the district his name, John Deighton, also called "Gassy Jack", Jack with the big mouth. He opened a pub in 1867, first visitors came and stayed, built houses and streets, planted trees and in 1886 Gastown officially became part of Vancouver. That same year, Gastown was devastated by a big fire. It took until the 1920s, then the district was rebuilt. Gastown is considered one of Vancouver's most beautiful neighborhoods.
