Knockmealdown summit

Knockmealdown is a rugged peak on the border of Counties Waterford and Tipperary in the south of Ireland. The mountain’s broad, scree-strewn flanks rise to 2,598 feet (792 m), making it the highest point in the range that bears its name.

Approaches to Knockmealdown are characterised by rough heathery ground, the stirring sound of burbling streams and relatively gentle gradients. There’s nothing technical, which makes it a good peak for the family, though dogs should be kept on leads at all times. The going can be boggy initially, so decent boots are recommended. Being the highest point for many miles, Knockmealdown is exposed to the elements and can be bitterly cold in winter, so dress appropriately.

The high, broad crown of the Knockmealdown Mountains

From the stone pillar that adorns the summit are tremendous views of Tipperary’s pastures to the north, backed by the Galtee Mountains to the northwest, and south to where the River Blackwater changes its course on its way to the sea. Keep your eyes peeled for hen harriers and red grouse, who use the Knockmealdowns as a breeding ground.

The Vee Pass road gives good access, with the layby above Bay Lough a common starting point. This approach usually involves ascending neighbouring Sugarloaf Hill, before continuing to Knockmealdown. You can seek accommodation in the village of Clogheen to the north of the Pass, south near Lismore Castle or there are more options further afield in the Tipperary county town of Clonmel.
