One of the many "maars" on the Villerücken, the name does not have the same meaning here (Ville & Vorgebirge) as in the Eifel, it is simply a body of water and has nothing to do with volcanic origin.

Somewhat hidden in the forest and only accessible via narrow paths is the wonderfully dreamy Heckelsmaar. In the middle rests a small island overgrown with birch trees, which is bordered by a wide belt of reeds. Obviously the maar is silting up. On the east bank there are some magnificent sequoias, which have provided plenty of offspring: many small sequoias form an undergrowth that is seldom found here. A special, almost enchanted place, right on the edge of Heimerzheim.
