The Protestant parish in Ochtrup is closely linked to the textile industry in this area. When the Laurenz textile company was founded in 1854, the local Catholic population could not provide enough workers. The first "Evangelicals" came to Ochtrup from all parts of Germany and Holland to work in the flourishing textile industry. They were cared for by the Evangelical Reformed Congregation in Gronau.
