It was rebuilt in its current form in 1461 by the will of Bianca Maria Visconti to fulfill a vow and entrusted to the guidance of the Franciscan order. A centrally planned building was erected, reinterpreting the canons of Eastern tradition.
In the early 16th century, a small portico on terracotta columns, the apse, and the bell tower with ogival mullioned windows were added.
