Embark on a challenging hike along the Punta Marguareis karst trail, a difficult route spanning 8.4 miles (13.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4605 feet (1404 metres). This demanding journey will take you around 7 hours and 55 minutes to complete. You will traverse unique karst landscapes in the Italian Alps, where limestone has been shaped into striking white rock formations. The terrain shifts from gravel paths to rugged alpine stone, guiding you through areas rich in colorful alpine flowers and dense forests. As you climb, you'll pass impressive peaks like Cima delle Saline, offering expansive views over Valle Ellero.
To begin your adventure, head to Passo delle Saline, the starting point for this demanding hike. You can reach the trailhead by car, and parking is conveniently available at nearby refuges. It is always wise to check local conditions before you set out, especially concerning weather and trail accessibility in alpine regions. Given the trail's length and difficulty, an early start is recommended to allow ample time to complete the route before dusk.
This route takes you through the largest and most renowned alpine karst area in Piedmont, showcasing a special landscape with diverse environments. You will cross the Conca delle Càrsene, a vast plateau of limestone rocks featuring bare white sections mixed with grassy cover, typical of karst regions. The ultimate reward is reaching Punta Marguareis, the highest peak of the Ligurian Alps, where you can enjoy panoramic views stretching from the western Alps all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.
