You'll gain 2916 feet (889 metres) over approximately 5 hours and 41 minutes, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. The route starts on paved or dirt roads, transitioning to rugged paths through Mediterranean scrub and rocky sections as you ascend. Expect splendid panoramic views throughout, especially from the summits of Monte Penello and Punta Martin, which offer vistas across the Gulf of Genoa, the Ligurian Rivieras, and even the Alps on clear days. The final push to Punta Martin's elegant, pointed summit is steep and rocky, but rewards you with exceptional 360-degree vistas.
Before you set out on this difficult route, ensure you have very good fitness and sturdy shoes, as rocky sections and exposure to wind are common. The area can experience strong winds and sudden fog, so checking weather conditions before your hike is crucial for a safe experience. Starting directly from Genova Acquasanta, the trail involves ascending an ancient path, sometimes on wet staircases. Be prepared for varied conditions and the demanding nature of the ascent to Punta Martin.
This trail is renowned for its incredible 360-degree vistas, making it a favorite among locals. As you hike, you'll pass Monte Penello, a rounded peak featuring bivouacs for shelter and a map table indicating visible mountains. Punta Martin, at 1001 metres, is recognizable by its elegant, pointed pyramidal shape and hosts a metal cross at its summit. Parts of this route also coincide with the longer Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, the Sentiero Italia, and the European E1 path, highlighting its significance in the regional trail network.
