Below the Bürgerbastei on the southwest slope of the Schlossberg is the Herberstein Garden. The Herberstein family of counts cultivated wine there from time immemorial; they could reach the vineyard named after them on the hill from their palace on Sackstraße via a rocky path (no longer accessible today).
In 1930, the Herberstein Garden was opened to the public from the "Kriegssteig" (War Trail). It is a terraced garden with Mediterranean plants and boasts a magnificent view of Graz's rooftops.

The Herberstein garden is the former vineyard of the Herberstein family, which was opened to the public in 1930 and now offers a Mediterranean flair over the city of Graz. The terrace area with its planting is one of the most beautiful examples of garden architecture from the interwar period.
