Embark on the moderate Heaval loop from Castlebay, a 3.9-mile (6.3 km) hike that takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will gain 1046 feet (319 metres) in elevation as you climb to the summit of Heaval, Barra's highest point. The trail features steep, rocky sections and rough grass, but rewards your effort with spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of Castlebay, the rugged coast, and the iconic Kisimul Castle in the bay.
To begin your hike, you can start directly from Castlebay harbor. Be prepared for some walking on the single-track A888 road before the route veers off-road onto potentially indistinct paths. Good fitness and sure-footedness are essential for the steep and rocky ascent, so make sure you wear proper clothing and footwear to handle the varied terrain and changeable weather conditions of the Outer Hebrides.
As you ascend, look for the white marble "Our Lady Star of the Sea" statue, located slightly off the main trail, which offers an excellent viewpoint over Castlebay. From the summit, you can see Vatersay, Mingulay, and other islands to the south, and on clear days, even the Small Isles and Skye to the east and northeast. The area is also a good spot for wildlife, with a chance to spot various birds, including golden eagles.
