A very steep climb with poor surface in places, but the effort is worth it. There are hardly any breaks, and it only levels out slightly towards the end. The road is very narrow and is actually closed to car traffic on weekends. The hut is beautifully situated below the Herzoghorn. From here, it's only three kilometers of unpaved road to Grafenmatt, so is it an alternative way to get to the Feldberg? Not really. This route isn't recommended with a proper racing bike, but it's doable with a touring bike. This saves you the climb over the main road.
