Although he himself didn't know what to do with the mountains, there is evidence of Thomas Mann's numerous stays at Tegernsee between 1899 and 1927. The summer of 1918 is particularly well remembered for working on the novella “Mr and Dog” in a holiday home on the Ringsee. Due to a private initiative, the world's first full-figure Thomas Mann monument has stood in Gmund since autumn 2001: the gentleman in a bronze hat smilingly holds out a stick to the dog in front of him.
