The bunkers on the Rennweg in the Haßbergen were used as explosive and ammunition bunkers during the Cold War. The Bundeswehr stored ammunition and explosives (such as anti-tank mines) in them in order to quickly blow up important connecting roads (such as the Königsberg–Hohnhausen road) at narrow points in the event of an attack by the Eastern Bloc. Today, the facilities in the Haßberge forest serve as protected winter quarters for bats.
