The column was installed on Kurt-Blaum-Platz in 2008. This was preceded by a competition won by the artist Kazuo Katase, who comes from Japan and lives in Kassel. The column, which is officially titled “The Draft” and which was effectively illuminated at the beginning of the evening, cost 200,000 euros at the time.
However, the light is currently (2020) is no longer properly reflected on the white metal because lichen and moss cover the inside of the column. This means that only a small part of the art column is lit up in the evenings.
