The Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven is the national maritime museum in Germany. It has been combining exhibitions and research work on shipping since 1975.

The main attraction inside is a Bremen cog from 1380. Some of the ships can be admired at any time in the museum harbor.

The internationally known artist Stephan Balkenhol created the Seemannsarm sculpture for the German Maritime Museum. It found its place when the supplementary building of the museum (architect: Dietrich Bangert) was opened to the public in 2000. Since then, the seaman's arm, on which a woman is "tattooed", has become a center of attraction, also for everyone who takes the path to the original museum building (architect: Hans Scharoun), which opened 25 years earlier.

This work of art is people-friendly and invites you to touch it or sit on it.
