Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen, also known as the Baron of Lies, was born here in May 1720 as one of eight children. At the age of 17 he went to the Russo-Austrian Turkish War with Duke Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. Many of his stories and fantasies are said to go back to this argument. You can find out more about the fibbing baron's life in the museum next door.
