This northern outlier is one of the last high bastions of the Lake District and a much-loved summit hidden away from the masses. Hikes to Carrock Fell are for those who enjoy the mountain air, the peace and quiet and the unique charm of the Northern Fells. It makes for a glorious family day out, with tumbling streams to explore and summer dips to enjoy in the pools.

Lovely views from the secluded Northern Fells

Due to its position as the last high ground before the more pastoral land to the east, the view from the summit is far reaching across to Penrith and beyond to the Pennines. To the north, the Solway Firth divides England from Scotland and the distant Southern Uplands. The view towards the centre of the Lake District is curtailed by the rounded higher points of the Northern Fells. An Iron Age hill fort, believed to be of Celtic origin, crowns the summit and the foundations of the walls still remain to this day.

The summit is also one of the few places in Britain, aside from the Cuillin of Skye, where gabbro rock is found. This makes Carrock Fell the only place in the Northern Fells where good rock climbing can be enjoyed. When the clag is in and navigation becomes key, it is worth bearing in mind that gabbro’s magnetic qualities have a habit of wreaking havoc with your compass needle.

Hesket Newmarket and Caldbeck both make good bases, though you will need a car to get to the foot of the mountain. To the south there are also accommodation options in the Mungrisdale region. In winter conditions, Carrock Fell should still be achievable if you are feeling adventurous.
