The building of today's museum was built in the 1920s and originally served as a ballroom and gymnasium before it was rebuilt from 1996 to 1999 and expanded by a three-story extension. The extension does not serve for the exhibition area, but creates space for a so-called "lively museum operation" with a seminar room, library, research laboratory, magazine rooms and work rooms for domestic and foreign guest researchers.
