Hiking
The Hallstatt Ossuary is located in St. Michael's Chapel, right next to the Catholic parish church in the center of Hallstatt.
It is one of the most famous ossuaries in Europe and houses over 1,200 human skulls, around 600 of which are artistically painted. The skulls are decorated with flowers, leaves, crosses, and the names and dates of death of the deceased. This tradition dates back to the 18th century. Many visitors initially find the ossuary unusual, but after their visit, they see it as an impressive testament to Hallstatt's history and culture.

Hiking
In addition to the world's oldest salt mine and the idyllic, world-famous postcard view, the 12th-century Ossuary in Michael's Chapel - to the right of the Catholic Parish Church - is one of the most interesting sights in Hallstatt: Visitors from all over the world come to this extraordinary collection every year to admire over 600 artfully painted skulls. Some were painted at the end of the 18th century, but some are also from the 20th century.
