This 2008 opened modern catholic building replaced the old St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. After lamenting that they lacked the $8 million to repair the old cathedral, the church ended up spending more than $180 million to build this new one, ignoring desperate calls from the community to focus on the urgent needs of the poor and homeless in the diocese. ctlcathedral.org
