    Hiking

This is a magnificent viewpoint on the Causeway Coast that looks out across Port na Tober. The terraced cliffs are a delight to behold, millions of years of geology writ large for all to see. You can take the weight off your feet by relaxing on the bench here, which also displays an illustrated map of the trail.

    Hiking

The entire route of the entire Giants Causeway tour is recorded on the bench, very nicely done.
Here you just have to sit down for a few minutes to enjoy the scenery.

    260m

Embark on a moderate hike along the Causeway Coast, covering 8.8 miles (14.2 km) with an elevation gain of 842 feet (257 metres). This route typically takes around 3 hours and 56 minutes to complete. You will traverse rugged grassy cliff-edge paths and open farmland, passing dramatic sheer cliffs and terraced bays like Port Moon. The trail offers continuous coastal views, culminating in elevated perspectives of the iconic hexagonal basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway. Expect varied terrain, including stone steps and wooden stiles, with a notable descent via the 162 steep Shepherd's Steps.

For your visit, it is often suggested to start at the historic Dunseverick Castle ruins and finish at the Giant's Causeway. This direction allows for convenient public transport options, such as the Causeway Rambler bus, or arranging a pickup for your return journey. The trail requires good fitness and sure-footedness due to some steep climbs and descents, as well as uneven surfaces. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate weather-proof clothing, given the exposed coastal conditions.

This section of the Causeway Coast Way is renowned for its unique geological formations and historical significance. You will encounter natural wonders like "The Organ" and "Giant's Boot" along the path, leading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Giant's Causeway, formed by ancient volcanic activity. Don't miss the panoramic views from Hamilton's Seat, considered one of Northern Ireland's most stunning viewpoints. The trail also offers glimpses into the rich history of Dunseverick Castle, linked to Ulster clans, Vikings, and Saint Patrick.

Embark on the Yellow Trail, Giant's Causeway, for a moderate hiking adventure that spans 6.2 miles (9.9 km). You will gain 552 feet (168 metres) in elevation, typically taking about 2 hours and 44 minutes to complete. This route offers a unique clifftop perspective, providing sweeping 360-degree views of the iconic basalt columns and the rugged coastline. As you hike, you will experience the dramatic scenery from above, often away from the main crowds. Keep an eye out for distinctive geological formations such as the Organ and the Amphitheatre, which add to the trail's visual appeal.

Before you set out, be aware that the Yellow Trail includes steep sections and varied terrain, making appropriate footwear essential for your comfort and safety. A notable part of the route is the Shepherd's Path, which features many steps. The trail is clearly marked on site maps provided by the National Trust, helping you navigate with ease. If you plan to bring your dog, they are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a lead at all times.

This trail provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the Giant's Causeway from a different vantage point, offering a less crowded experience of the famous basalt columns. Beyond the unique geology, you can also observe local wildlife; look towards the cliffs for nesting fulmars. The route consistently follows the clifftop, ensuring continuous panoramic views that highlight the natural grandeur of this World Heritage Site.
