    Hiking

Jagged rocks with undulating terrain. The steps are not all consistent height or distance apart so those who struggle walking should take heed. There is a path for handicap access to get close to the lake, but it doesn’t take you all the way there.

The Hamilton Pool Trail offers an easy hike through a unique landscape. You will descend from semi-arid uplands into a cooler, humid canyon environment, leading to the stunning Hamilton Pool Waterfall. This short route covers 1.6 miles (2.5 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 56 feet (17 metres), taking about 39 minutes to complete. The grotto itself features visible stalactites and dramatic limestone cliffs draped in rich greenery.

Before you head out, remember that a reservation is required to visit Hamilton Pool Preserve. Make sure to book your spot ahead of time to ensure entry. It is also important to know that swimming access in Hamilton Pool is not always guaranteed; conditions can vary based on water quality and safety. Additionally, pets are not allowed on the trail or anywhere within the preserve. Plan your visit accordingly to make the most of your time.

The grotto at Hamilton Pool is a geological marvel, formed by a collapsed dome that reveals ancient limestone formations. Beyond the main pool, the trail continues to follow Hamilton Creek. This creek eventually flows towards the Pedernales River, providing a sense of the larger natural system at play. Keep an eye out for local wildlife as you explore the diverse habitats along the route. The unique transition from dry uplands to a lush canyon makes this area particularly special.
