The Alpe di Succiso da Succiso il Nuovo loop hike offers a challenging yet rewarding journey through the Northern Apennines. This difficult route spans 8.2 miles (13.2 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3124 feet (952 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 38 minutes to complete. You will traverse diverse terrain, moving from dense beech forests to rocky sections and exposed ridge paths, especially as you approach the summit. Keep an eye out for the quiet Lago di Monte Acuto and the historic Sentiero Barbarossa as you make your way.
Planning your visit requires good preparation; this is a hard hike demanding very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience. While much of the path is accessible, certain sections on the ridge are slightly exposed, and climbs require caution, particularly if there is snow. You should be prepared for varied surfaces and be aware that the rocky channel can be more challenging under snowy conditions. Always check local conditions before you head out.
Alpe di Succiso is one of the highest and most rugged peaks in the Northern Apennines, standing just over 2000 meters. Its unique pyramidal structure, carved by large gullies, makes it a distinctive landmark for experienced hikers. From the summit, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views that stretch from the sea all the way to the Alps on clear days. The route also passes by significant features like the Bivacco Ghiaccioni, built from the ruins of a World War I structure, adding a touch of history to your alpine adventure.
