The stone obelisk has marked the intersection of the Rennsteig with the old, important trade route Via Regia, which led from Leipzig via Eisenach to Frankfurt am Main, since 1833. The pass is considered one of the lowest and historically most important crossings of the Thuringian Forest. In 1813, Napoleon's defeated troops used this route for their retreat after the Battle of Leipzig.
