    Hiking

Pian della Capanna is an articulated stone and wood structure at the foot of the Alpe della Luna, along the GEA, of which it is a stop, and along the path of San Francesco, in one of its wildest and most spectacular stretches. The structure is managed as a hiking refuge, with a caretaker who is lucky enough to live there and to welcome hikers who have chosen this part of the Apennines for their wanderings. The Alpe della Luna Trail offers a challenging hiking experience through dense beechwoods and winding forest paths. You will gain 4127 feet (1258 metres) in elevation over 17.3 miles (27.9 km), making this a difficult route that takes about 9 hours and 15 minutes to complete. As you climb, look for the dramatic Ripa della Luna, a sickle-shaped rocky wall that stands out in the landscape, and enjoy extensive panoramic views of the Marche Apennines from higher points. You will also encounter waterfalls and naturally formed rock pools along the way.

Before you head out, remember that this is a difficult hike requiring very good fitness and sure-footedness. The trail is located within the Riserva Naturale dell'Alpe della Luna in Arezzo, Tuscany. While specific permits are not mentioned, it is always wise to check local conditions before your visit. Parking is generally available near trailheads in natural parks, but confirming specific access points beforehand can save you time.

This route takes you deep into the Riserva Naturale dell'Alpe della Luna, a natural park whose name is likely inspired by the striking Ripa della Luna rock formation. The area is characteristic of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, with its rich natural environment. Keep an eye out for the unique geological features and diverse flora that make this region special.
