Embark on the Colby Canyon, Strawberry Spur and Josephine Peak Loop, a moderate hike that begins in the cool, shaded Colby Canyon, where you might cross streams as you ascend. The landscape soon opens up, revealing expansive views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the distinctive, steep southern face of Strawberry Peak. This rewarding route covers 6.8 miles (11.0 km) with a significant 1711 feet (521 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 34 minutes to complete.
For your visit, plan to start at the Colby Canyon Trailhead, where parking is generally available. Much of the trail is exposed to the sun, so make sure to bring ample water, especially during warmer months. Wearing long pants is also a good idea, as it can protect you from potential poisonous plants and overgrown brush in certain sections of the path.
From the summit of Josephine Peak, you will be treated to sweeping vistas that include Big Tujunga Canyon, downtown Los Angeles, and even Catalina Island on clear days. The unique, almost upside-down shape of Strawberry Peak is a notable landmark you will observe along this journey. This loop provides a solid workout while immersing you in the diverse scenery of the Angeles National Forest.
