The Nienwohlder Moor is one of the most important Atlantic bogs in Schleswig-Holstein due to its size and state of conservation. Peat was mined here on a large scale until the late 1970s. The bog was later renatured. As a result of the rewetting, rare birds such as Marsh Harrier and Brown and Stonechat settled. At times, cranes also inhabit the Nienwohlder Moor. But not only birds feel at home here. On sunny days you can observe up to twenty different types of dragonflies.
