The cathedral is Scandinavia's most important medieval religious building and is still the spiritual center of Norway today. All coronation ceremonies took place there until 1906. The church was built over the tomb of St. Olav between 1066 and 1093.

Nidaros Cathedral is a must-see when visiting Trondheim. We were particularly impressed by the effort made with the figures in the front of the cathedral. In the back yard you can see how the figures have to be constantly renewed because the stone is decaying.

Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim (the city’s former name: Nidaros) is one of Norway’s most important churches and is regarded as a national shrine. The Norwegian Constitution of 1814 stipulated that the Norwegian monarch should be crowned in Trondheim. For the intrepid pilgrims, it marks the destination of their pilgrimage. At the Nidaros Pilgrim Centre (pilegrimsgarden.pilegrimsleden.no/de), successful pilgrims can collect their certificate and meet the pilgrim priest. There is also a café where you can relax.
