The village of Niederwiera was first mentioned in a document in 1336 as "Wira" or "Wyra". As early as 1279, a "Witego plebanus in Wiera" was mentioned, which probably refers to the neighboring town of Oberwiera. Niederwiera, like its neighboring town of Röhrsdorf, originally belonged to the property of the Grünhain monastery in the Westerzgebirge in the Altenburger Land. The church of Niederwiera was built during the founding period of Niederwiera.
