Named after the Prussian building inspector Bernhard Matthias Brasch, who played a key role in the city's reconstruction after the devastating fire of 1787, the square is one of Neuruppin's three main town squares. Together with the church square and the school square, it forms an ensemble that ranks among the largest European squares of the 18th century – with an area of approximately 33,000 m², it is even larger than many famous squares in Paris or Lisbon.
