Embark on the Rifugio Giacoletti e Rifugio Du Viso loop tour for a challenging hike around the majestic Monviso mountain. This difficult route covers 9.2 miles (14.9 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4360 feet (1329 metres), typically taking 8 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You will traverse diverse alpine environments, from rugged rocky sections and scree slopes to verdant grassy areas, often encountering snowfields even in midsummer. The trail offers panoramic views of the Monviso massif and its surrounding peaks, leading you past crystalline glacial lakes like Lago Fiorenza and Lago Superiore. Be prepared for equipped sections with fixed ropes and chains on technical descents and ascents. You might even spot ibex and marmots along the way.
This loop tour demands very good physical fitness, sure-footedness, and experience in alpine conditions. You should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for significant elevation changes and technical sections. Early in the season, an ice axe and crampons may be essential in certain parts of the route. The trail connects strategically located mountain huts, Rifugio Giacoletti and Rifugio Du Viso, which serve as essential stops for rest and meals. Plan your visit carefully, as conditions can vary greatly in the high mountains.
The trail uniquely crosses the border between Italy and France, offering a distinct international traverse. A notable historical feature is the Buco del Viso, an 80-meter-long tunnel that is the oldest in the Alps, facilitating this cross-border journey. You will also visit Pian del Re, recognized as the source of the Po River, Italy's longest river. The Monviso area itself is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its unique natural importance and the imposing
