On October 24, 1963, a mine accident in the form of a water ingress occurred in the Mathilde mine in Lenged. The spectacular rescue operations with the help of the Dahlbusch bomb went around the world at the time and became known as the "Miracle of Lengede" and later also made into a film.
A visit to the memorial is definitely worth it. Another misfortune is remembered there, an explosion in 1968.

Very beautifully designed place to commemorate the mining accident and the miracle of Lengede. For me it was very moving to stand at the exact spot where 60 years ago the miracle of saving 11 miners was achieved, but any help came too late for 29 miners.
