Beinn Dubh Summit

Hiking

5.0

(132)

Beinn Dubh lies between the vast Loch Lomond, Gare Loch and Loch Long. Residing in the south of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, this wonderful mountain rises to 2,106 feet (642 m) and provides phenomenal views over Loch Lomond.

Beinn Dubh is easily ascended from the village of Luss on Lomond’s beautiful shores. You can add several of its sibling summits in too, and complete a loop if you want. Either way, the views of the loch and the Arrochar Alps are epic if the weather is clear.

A fantastic, easy mountain with disproportionately splendid views

The most popular starting point is the pretty village of Luss which has car parking and eateries for your return. The ascent begins immediately, straight up the grassy ridge that Beinn Dubh stretches out to the village. An exposed ridge, the views across Loch Lomond and Glen Luss reward you early on. As you near the top, the views become staggering, with the island-studded loch stretching away.

If you reach the summit in good weather, you might not want to leave, as the panorama is exceptional. The Arrochar Alps, including the striking form of The Cobbler, can be seen to the north, reaching skywards. You can continue around to Coire na h-Eanachan and Mid Hill, descending from there into Glen Luss or you can simply retrace your steps. If you continue, the terrain can be much boggier.

If you have winter mountaineering experience then this is a particularly manageable peak to summit in the darker months as it’s quick and non-technical. It’s a good peak for older children in the warmer months too.

    Hiking

Beinn Dubh is the first summit on the Glen Striddle Horseshoe, a fine outing into the Luss Hills. Its 2,106-foot (642 m) summit reveals spectacular views of the island-studded southern reaches of Loch Lomond and north towards the Arrochar Alps, where the characterful, craggy form of the Cobbler takes centre stage.

If completing the horseshoe route, the going gets boggier after Beinn Dubh. Many retrace their steps and return to Luss from here, though a complete circuit above Glen Striddle is the more satisfying option.

    670m

Embark on the Beinn Dubh horseshoe loop from Luss, a rewarding hike offering spectacular panoramic views across Loch Lomond and towards the Arrochar Alps. This circular route covers 7.3 miles (11.8 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2208 feet (673 metres), making it a moderate challenge that typically takes around 4 hours and 14 minutes to complete. You will find the ascent to Beinn Dubh challenging and constant, but the well-trodden path soon gives way to grassy sections, with some parts potentially steep and slippery on the descent, and boggy underfoot in lower areas. From the summit, you can clearly see the island-studded southern reaches of Loch Lomond and the distinctive craggy form of the Cobbler. Mid Hill also offers lovely viewpoints before you enjoy an easy walk down Glen Luss.

Starting and finishing in the picturesque conservation village of Luss, this trail is easily accessible, especially if you are coming from Glasgow. You can find parking conveniently located at the Luss Visitor Centre. Remember to come prepared with proper hill gear and sturdy boots, as conditions can change quickly, and the terrain can be wet and boggy in places. While the initial climb is demanding, the early rewards of breathtaking views make the effort worthwhile.

This horseshoe-shaped trail, sometimes known as the Glen Striddle Horseshoe, is a highlight within Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park. It is particularly notable for its continuous scenic views throughout the loop, making it a major draw for hikers. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; you might spot deer, sheep, and various birdlife like skylarks and wheatears. Be aware that weather conditions can shift rapidly, bringing strong winds and colder temperatures at higher elevations, even when it feels mild in Luss.
