From Launch 1909 to 1914
The Grand Duchess Elisabeth's prehistory includes the three-masted schooner "San Antonio," launched in 1907 by shipowner Andreas Hammerstein. In 1908, this "San Antonio" collided with the light cruiser "Emden" of the German Imperial Navy. As a result of this collision, the San Antonio sank. The crew was rescued, but only the cook remains missing.
The maritime court hearing in Kiel determined that the light cruiser "Emden" caused the collision. The Imperial Navy must pay the shipowner to build a new ship.
