The Zwenkauer See is an artificially created lake located about 12 km south of the Leipzig city center, in the heart of the Leipziger Neuseenland. It was created from an open-cast mining pit, which was opened for tourist use on May 9, 2015.

Eythra was a village south of Leipzig. It belonged administratively to the Leipzig-Land district in the Leipzig district. At the beginning of the 1980s, the entire village had to make way for lignite mining and was excavated by the Zwenkau open-cast mine. In 1988, the devastated fields of Eythra and its district Bösdorf were incorporated into Knautnaundorf, with which they came to the city of Leipzig in 1999.

Memorial stone in memory of the village of Eythra. It was first mentioned in 979. From 1983 to 1987 it was covered by open-cast mining, and the 2120 inhabitants were resettled.
