Hiking

The building was built between 1901 and 1903 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The brick building has various turrets, gables and decorative elements. In 1920 the east wing was added for the first time, and in the 1930s the attic and basement floors were expanded and air raid shelters were set up. The building was badly damaged by the war, in particular the areas of the north and east sides of the east wing showed massive fire damage. Overall, the building is U-shaped with the main building, a short west and a longer east wing.

As memorials to the many dead, such monuments or war memorials remain very important to this day. "Now, Lord, you are releasing your servant in peace, according to your word..." it says in the so-called "Song of Simeon" (Luke 2:29). However, the people commemorated here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny.

Many places one encounters along the way are—even today—an important testament to the horrors of war and tyranny. They all have two essential functions:

1. To commemorate and remember the victims

2. To urge the preservation of peace
