At Preysingplatz, Haidhausen's history is palpable: in front of St. John's Church stands the almost inconspicuous Brickmaker's Fountain, designed by Hans Osel in 1978, reminding us that everything began here with bricks. Since the Middle Ages, clay was mined in and around Haidhausen, fired into bricks, and Munich was built from them, including the Frauenkirche. From the very beginning, a large number of Italian seasonal workers, mostly from Friuli, were involved. The "Stampadore" puts the clay into the mold, another worker carries the fired bricks to the construction site. - Few traces of this industrial prehistory remain today.
