The castle was probably built in the 12th century; it was first documented in 1280.
During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was largely destroyed in 1643 and has been a ruin ever since.
Today, the site is freely accessible and a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and history enthusiasts.
