The detour leads to absolutely stunning pools and is certainly not useless. Definitely worth doing. You only have to walk the last 150 meters downhill towards the river. It's a bit steep in places, but not dangerous. Otherwise, check out my previous tours.

There are numerous natural swimming pools in the forest and the Aïtone waterfalls tempt the bravest... the water there is rarely warmer than 11° - even in midsummer!

These include the Cascade du Voile de la Mariée, known for its 70-meter cascade, the Polischellu Waterfalls with natural pools for swimming and canyoning, and the Aitone Waterfalls nestled in a laricio pine forest, also featuring natural swimming holes. Other notable cascades are Piscia di l'Onda, Les Cascades des Anglais, and the illuminated Ucelluline Waterfall.
Yes, many waterfalls in the area offer refreshing natural pools for swimming. The Aïtone Natural Pools are particularly famous, though the water remains cool even in summer. The Antia Stream Swimming Area also provides cascade pools for a refreshing dip. The Polischellu Waterfalls and Les Cascades des Anglais, mentioned in the broader region, are also popular for wild swimming.
The ideal time to visit the waterfalls around Casamaccioli is in spring, particularly during the snowmelt. This ensures the highest water flow, making the cascades most impressive. While still beautiful, some waterfalls may have reduced flow later in the summer.
The area around Casamaccioli offers various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as those found in the Hiking around Casamaccioli guide, which includes routes like the 'Lac de Nino view' loop. Always check the specific trail difficulty before heading out with children.
The Radule waterfall is part of the Golo stream and is located near the sheepfold of the same name. It's generally considered an intermediate-level highlight, suggesting it requires some walking to reach. Visitors often describe the valley it flows through as magnificent, making the journey worthwhile.
For a waterfall hike, it's advisable to bring sturdy footwear suitable for rocky and potentially wet terrain. If you plan to swim, pack swimwear and a towel. Given the natural settings, carrying water, snacks for a picnic, and sun protection is also recommended. Some areas, like the Aïtone Natural Pools, are perfect for a picnic.
While popular spots like Aïtone and Radule attract visitors, the broader region of Corsica has many smaller, less-known cascades. Exploring trails off the main paths or visiting during off-peak times (early morning or late afternoon) can lead to a more secluded experience. The Abri d’Antia Waterfall, for example, involves a detour with a steep descent, which might deter some, offering a more tranquil experience for those who make the effort.
Beyond the cascades, the region boasts diverse natural beauty. You'll encounter dense forests, such as the laricio pine forest surrounding the Aïtone waterfalls. The Golo stream, which feeds the Radule waterfall, flows through a magnificent valley. Many areas feature rocky paths and stunning viewpoints, offering panoramic vistas of the Corsican landscape.
Casamaccioli itself is a commune in the Niolu valley. While public transport options might be limited directly to all trailheads, major towns like Corte (approximately 12 km away) serve as hubs. From there, access to some waterfall areas might require a car or a combination of local transport and walking. It's best to research specific routes and local bus schedules if relying on public transport.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty and the refreshing experience of the natural pools. The scenic views along the paths, such as those leading to the Antia Stream Swimming Area, are often highlighted. Many appreciate the opportunity to cool off in the clear, cool waters, even in midsummer, and the wild, unspoiled landscapes that offer a contrast to coastal attractions.
