The association "Friends and Supporters of the Reconstruction of the Sandauer Church e.V." takes care of St. Laurentius / St. Nikolaus on a voluntary basis. During our visit, we received a lot of clear information about the project first hand, as well as coffee and biscuits, and even tips for continuing the journey by bike. Saint Lawrence, to whom the town church in Havelberg is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was the Pope's archdeacon and was asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the church's treasure. Lawrence asked for three days, during which he distributed the church's wealth among the poor inhabitants of Rome and, after the agreed time, came to the emperor with the poor to present them to him as the church's treasure. He was then tortured to death. Legend has it that he was roasted alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of Saint Lawrence - over coals. He is said to have been in good spirits and to have asked his executioner that he was on one side and asked if he would turn him over. The memorial day of Saint Lawrence in the calendar of saints is August 10th.

The first town hall was built after 1310. In 1420, also known as Lobium, it had a courthouse like the town halls in Wittstock and Tangermünde. In 1627 the Danes destroyed the building, only the medieval vaults in the Ratskeller remained. It was rebuilt in 1678. The current building dates from 1854. In 1936, the former “Ratsapotheke” was included in the town hall complex during another renovation. With the support of urban development funding, the town hall was extensively renovated in 1995/96.
