The Iron Trail is a high-altitude trail in the Ore Mountains, the historical course of which follows the northern edge of the Ore Mountains. According to local history, it was used to transport iron ore from the area around Schneeberg as early as the Middle Ages. The route, which is still marked today, stretches from the Katzenstein near Affalter and runs through the Streitwald to the Tabakstanne and further through the Bürgerwald, past the Black Cross monument to the Harthauer Berg south of Chemnitz on the federal highway 95. Today the Iron Trail is a popular route for hikers and cyclists, connecting the area south of Chemnitz with the hiking trails in the central Ore Mountains.
