Tips from the Community

August 31, 2026, Altenahr Station

Nestled in the picturesque Ahr Valley, Altenahr station presents itself as a charming place that fascinatingly combines past and present. Its style and architecture resemble those of the neighboring station buildings in Dernau and Mayschoß, which today are also privately owned and serve new purposes. It is speculated that possibly the same architect was responsible for all three buildings, which were built at the end of the 19th century in the style of the time. The impressive natural stone ground floor and the timber-framed upper floors lend Altenahr station a nostalgic charm that attracts visitors from all over the world. In the 1970s, the first floor often housed the railway official and his family, while tickets were sold and luggage was checked in on the ground floor, and travelers waited for their train in the waiting room. Later, the station building fulfilled a variety of functions, making it a vibrant center of village life. It served not only as a stop for the Ahrtalbahn but also as a guest house and tourist information center. An annex housed the "Taverna Sirtaki," where visitors could enjoy traditional Greek cuisine. The former waiting room was used for various purposes, including meetings of the Altenahr municipal council and other events. After the building was severely damaged by devastating flood damage, it is now undergoing a comprehensive renovation process to restore its original function.
