The building, located directly on the Rhine, has housed the "Historical Museum on the River - Hildegard von Bingen" since 1998 and was built in 1898 as the "Bingen Electric Power Plant" (inscription plaque). The original industrial use remains visible inside the building (including a freight crane from 1917). Dominating features are the strongly protruding central projection on the front, crowned by a steep gable roof, and the two smaller dormers facing the city and the river. The polygonal greywacke masonry for the wall surfaces and red brick for the structuring architectural elements clearly show historicist features. The facade is structured by high, pointed-arch windows reminiscent of Gothic church buildings, which shape the building's character as a "cathedral of progress."
