The old wooden bridge over the Else River has now been replaced by a new concrete bridge. It's still only for cyclists and pedestrians. 😊

You can tread water here. The water is really cold. It's truly refreshing on hot days.

The nature reserve has protected the 117 hectare floodplain of the Else between Bünde and Kirchlengern since 1995. The largely natural course of the Else shows the typical wide loops of a river that - in this section - has not been straightened. The Else builds steep banks, dense woodland and small islands "in the river". This 3.5 km long area is unique in its kind in the surrounding area. The floodplain is influenced by groundwater and is regularly flooded in large parts. The weir at the Elsemühle prevents flora and fauna from naturally migrating through it. For several years, Scottish Highland cattle have been supporting the practical maintenance of the area on around 11 hectares of grassland and provide particularly beautiful photo opportunities, especially in spring when the young calves spend their first days outdoors.
